When spending thousands of dollars on a new roof, one important question to ask yourself is, “How do I know I need roof repair?” There are different types of people in this world. The DIY type that find it their mission to do home repairs themselves and the “call it in” type, who will call for help no matter what the problem is. At 7 Summits we want to give you some helpful information that will make it easier for you no matter what type you are to help you know when your roof may be in need of repair. The best way to be prepared is to, first of all, take a look at your roof several times a year especially after the harsh winters here in Colorado Springs and during the summer when there can be lots of rain or hail. Your eyes will tell you a lot about what is going on up there on your roof.
How Do I Know I Need Roof Repair? 3 Helpful tips
Do you see curling or buckling of your shingles? This is a definite sign that you may be in need of roof repair. When your shingles start to buckle it tends to look like there is actually something underneath the shingle pushing it up. However, this is not the case. Buckling or curling of your shingles can actually caused by several different things. Poor roof ventilation will cause the moisture that builds up in your attic to become condensation which then becomes trapped between the underlayment and the roofing shingles. Another cause for buckling is when the felt (tar paper) or vapor barrier is not installed properly. When the Felt is not applied and stretched to your plywood (roof decking) in the proper way it will cause your shingles to buckle.
After a hail storm one of the main causes of damage from the hail is missing granules from your asphalt shingles. When looking at your roof for missing granules you should be able to see the areas that are damaged clearly. If you have to use a magnifying glass to see if there’s damage, you are probably in good shape. However, after any big hail storm it may be a great idea to call us to come survey any damage that may have been caused. Hail damage can become very costly if left unattended.
The final helpful way you can identify if you need roof repair is to look inside your house as well. Do you have water stains in the attic or on any of the ceilings in your home? A leaky roof is most easily spotted by the signs inside of your home. Another way you may be able to tell if you have a leak is if your energy bills have increased. Higher energy bills can indicate that your heat or cooling system is possibly being overworked. Leaks in your roof that are left unrepaired can cause serious damage to your home and will be very expensive to be repaired if you wait too long.
